Steel coils stored on floor

Typical coils stored on pallets

Decades ago, companies working with round bundles of steel had no alternative but to remove coils from a flatbed and store them on the floor. Today most companies are still storing coils or coil saddles on the floor.

Did you ever ask yourself why?

We can all agree that warehouse space is valuable and that any storage that is limited to the floor alone is costing you money. To add fuel to the fire, coils sprawled about the floor quickly become a safety hazard and an inventory nightmare, not to mention that it leaves metal, steel or aluminum coils susceptible to damage.

What are steel coil storage systems and how do we store large metal coils?

Storing steel or metal coil rolls on the floor quickly becomes a bottleneck in your industrial area that is neither cost effective nor safe for the employees working on the floor. Time is money and storing these expensive rolls of coil on the floor is a waste of both these valuable resources.

Questions to ask to determine if you should be using heavy duty steel coil rack:

  • Can you quickly find any coil in your warehouse?
  • Are your materials easy to get at when you need one?
  • Can you easily unload coils from a flatbed truck or trailer and store them efficiently?
  • When you go to pull a coil, are they so buried you have to rearrange half the floor in order to even get at them?
  • Do you have specific locations to store your coil rolls or do you just put them on moving pads wherever you have an open spot?
  • Does your storage consist of steel coil storage pads or steel coil floor pads alone? Or steel coil saddles left on the floor?
  • Have any of your materials been damaged due to less than ideal light duty storage locations?
  • Are you comfortable with your steel coil storage safety program?

If you are struggling with any of these issues or issues with wire rope, etrack strap, chain slings, moving supplies or trailer products, you need a steel coil storage system.

Frequently Asked Questions about Coil Racking

Coil rack provides storage on high-strength shelves for large rolled bundles of coil, which rest securely in cradles or on horizontal arms for stability. This type of system offers many advantages, such as easy access for loading and unloading, reduced material damage and improved safety for employees.

There are two distinct types of coil racking, designed for flexibility. Either cradles or arms securely hold each coil in position, so that they can be organized off of the floor. Most companies use forklifts to transport the rolls from one spot to another.

Coil racks are an industrial rack system that gives individual bundles of coils their own safe and organized spot for storing. Usually stacked vertically in individual rack spaces, this system takes coiled material from the floor to a specially designed rack, eliminating floor clutter while still supporting the heavy weight of the load.

SJF's coil racks are built with structural steel for strength and durability. There are many possible configuration options and each are customizable for the individual space. They are similar to cantilever racking in some instances, where horizontal arms are used to hang the coil from the supported cantilever racking. Other options include a rack shelving type of storage system where cradles are included to stop the coils from rolling.

Coil racks are a very safe and strong solution that gives many options and can hold as many or as few coils as you have a need for. They can be stacked vertically to clear floor space as high as the rack capacity allows, or stocked horizontally or even back-to-back.

The Solution - How To Store Steel Coils

Coil racks from SJF Material Handling are specifically-designed to replace steel bundle storage issues with storage solutions that make coils easy to find and safe to handle. Coil racks are an innovative yet cost-effective storage solution that allows you to safely remove coils from a flatbed and store ultra-heavy steel rolls three, four or even five levels high and more.

With coil racks, unloading coils and storing them on the floor will be a distant memory.

SJF Material Handling's coil racks make it so every coil has a designated slot with coil storage cradles or coil saddles, thus protecting each coil from damage. Every coil is easy to find because everything is stored off the floor and out of the way.

No more moving one coil to get at another. No matter what a coil's size or weight, SJF Material Handling will custom design and manufacture steel coil storage solutions specifically designed, engineered and manufactured for your operation.

Benefits of SJF's Structural Steel Coil Storage Racks

New Coil Racking Solution

What are the benefits of steel coil racking?

  • Free up valuable floor space
  • Instantly increase your existing warehouse's storage capacity
  • Easily find and locate any coil in inventory
  • Easy direct access to any and all stored coils
  • Drastically reduce damage to coil inventory
  • Easy access and retrieval of any coils in the system
  • Modular design - ability to quickly add or reconfigure bays as needed
  • Increased safety for both employees and the expensive coils.

By stacking coils that were formerly stored on the floor, steel coil storage solutions using coil racking free up valuable floor space while providing a high density storage solution. All while using existing warehouse space.

Coil Racks Make Finding & Picking Coils a Breeze

Coil Rack System Standards

The days of moving coils aside to get at the one you need are gone! Stacking coils using coil rack provides easy access to all coils while maximizing your warehouse's pre-existing storage capacity. Coils are neatly stored in their own designated coil storage cradles or steel coil saddles, providing easy access for coil retrieval. SJF's structural steel coil racks are specifically-designed, engineered and manufactured to provide a tailor-made high-capacity storage system solution designed for easy storage and retrieval of coils.

SJF coil racks are designed to be safe

While it's great to be cost-effective and save space, it still needs to be safe. Let's face it, coils are weighty. There are many dangerous things that can happen when you try to store heavy things in high places and most of them are not good. It only takes a brief search on YouTube to see what happens when overloaded and under-engineered storage racks fail and collapse. When one section comes down, it all comes down. At best, things are destroyed. And sadly, at worst, people die.

There is a better way. At SJF, we've designed and manufactured all our heavy duty coil racks with safety in mind. All rack load bars, beams and columns are manufactured using structural steel with wide flange beams and a 50 KSI minimum yield, offering greater strength and durability compared to roll-formed steel. SJF coils racks are built to be safe.

Each of our racks are designed and manufactured following the most stringent American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) guidelines. Our weight capacity ratings are robust yet remain some of the most conservative in the industry. In the end, our coil racks will do what we say they will do and hold what we say they will hold. Period. We openly challenge any manufacturer anywhere to come up with a rack that pound-for-pound will outperform ours. Won't happen. We guarantee it!

Pallet Racks are NOT the Same as Coil Racks

Steel Coil Rack System Standards

While coils racks and pallet racks are both made of structural steel, they are vastly different in what they can and cannot do.

Pallet racks are made of structural or roll-formed steel load bars. Some of the most noteworthy of the brands are manufactured to meet Rack Manufacturers Institute (RMI) standards.

The RMI provides a set of manufacturing standards to rack manufacturers to build racks for storing pallets loaded with product. The high majority of racks covered under the RMI guidelines are designed to support pallet loads ranging from 1,000 lbs. to 5,000 lbs. per pallet.

In comparison, heavy metal coils racks need to support coil weights with a breaking strength of 30,000 lbs. or more.

The majority of the structural pallet racking on the market today was never designed, nor ever meant to be designed, to meet the load requirements needed to safely store the huge coils we see today.

SJF Coils Storage Racks are Designed & Manufactured Using AISC Standards

American Institute of Steel Construction

While the RMI set the standard that manufacturers use to build racks to safely store pallets, the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) standards were developed for heavy-duty structural steel construction projects, such as bridges and buildings. AISC sets the standard for safely building structures that hold millions of pounds. If you are looking to store coils safely, you need a storage rack solution designed and built with coils in mind.

Coil racks are a storage rack system made specifically for storing heavy coils

Comparing the carrying capacity and structural integrity of standard structural pallet racks to SJF's coil storage racks is like comparing a BB gun to a bazooka. There simply is no comparison. When it comes to effectively storing your coils while still maintaining a safe environment for your employees, you need a storage system with the structural firepower and safety factor that only SJF's structural steel heavy duty coil racks can provide.
