Rack Engineering | Authorized Distributor and Installation Partner

About Rack Engineering

Rack Engineering Division (RED) designs and manufactures heavy-duty industrial storage systems, including racks, cabinets, carts, and workstations built to endure demanding production and warehouse environments. Every product is built in Northern Michigan, 100% in the USA, backed by RED's engineering experience since 1935. Beyond the racking line, RED also builds mobile and modular cabinets, tool and utility carts, assembly tables and gauging stations, and a full stainless steel line for washdown and cleanroom environments.

SJF is a distributor partner for the RED line as part of our brand-agnostic approach to warehouse design. RED builds to your exact size, capacity, and RAL powder coat color rather than limiting you to standard dimensions, which makes their equipment a fit for dies, tooling, coils, sheet stock, and other heavy or awkward loads that don't fit standard racking. We help customers spec the right configuration and coordinate delivery and installation from quote to install, whether the job is a single crank-out cantilever set next to a laser table or a full sheet metal storage system spanning a fabrication shop.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Rack Engineering make?

Rack Engineering Division manufactures heavy-duty industrial storage systems, including racks, cabinets, carts, and workstations, focused on high-capacity, made-to-order configurations. The line SJF distributes centers on crank-out cantilever rack, glide-out shelving, and Sheet Master and Sheet Stacker sheet metal storage. Every product is built in Northern Michigan, 100% in the USA, and backed by RED's engineering experience since 1935.

  • Is Rack Engineering racking made in the USA?

Yes. Rack Engineering manufactures 100% of its storage systems in Northern Michigan, using domestic steel and labor, and has done so since the company was founded in 1935. SJF distributes and installs that equipment nationwide.

  • What's the difference between Crank-Out Cantilever and standard cantilever rack?

Standard cantilever rack is a fixed system: arms stay in place and material is loaded and unloaded from the front. Crank-Out Cantilever adds a hand crank that extends the fully loaded arms 100% into the aisle, so an overhead crane or hoist can load and unload from any position without a forklift driver working the material by hand. It's typically the better fit next to fabrication machinery where material changeover happens often.

  • Should I use Glide-Out shelving or Sheet Master for sheet metal storage?

Glide-Out is a general-purpose shelving system rated up to 4,000 lbs per shelf, suited to a range of stored products beyond sheet metal. Sheet Master is purpose-built for the metal fabrication industry, with configurations like fixed, folding, rear-loading, and bi-directional, plus a crank-out option up to 10,000 lbs specifically for sheet, plate, and fixture storage. If the operation is dedicated to sheet metal fabrication, Sheet Master is usually the better fit; for mixed or lighter loads, Glide-Out often works well.

  • Does SJF install Rack Engineering equipment, or just sell it?

SJF installs Rack Engineering products as part of full-service warehouse and shop-floor storage projects, and our crews handle layout, supply, and installation as one job. For customers who only need equipment shipped, we can supply Rack Engineering products on their own as well.

  • Can Rack Engineering products be customized?

Yes. Rack Engineering builds most of its line to order. Capacity, dimensions, number of levels or shelves, and accessories like dividers, UHMW lining, and pin tables can all be specified to the application. SJF works with Rack Engineering on the configuration during the quoting process so the system matches your material and floor space.

  • How do I know which Rack Engineering product fits my operation?

It depends on what you're storing and how you access it. Long bar stock, tube, and pipe generally point toward Crank-Out Cantilever; sheet metal and plate point toward Sheet Master or Sheet Stacker; and general shelf storage with overhead access needs often fits Glide-Out. SJF can walk through your material types, floor space, and lifting equipment to recommend the right system.

  • Does Rack Engineering only build standard sizes?

No. Standard sizes are available, but RED's storage systems are built to excel at made-to-order configurations, sized to your exact space, load, and workflow rather than limited to standard increments. That includes custom RAL powder coat colors to match facility branding or safety standards, and a stainless steel option for washdown, cleanroom, or corrosive environments.

  • When's the right time to bring SJF in on a Rack Engineering project?

As soon as an upgrade or process improvement is on the table, not after the layout is already set. Bringing SJF in early, while you're still thinking through a layout change, evaluating whether current storage still fits the operation, or comparing options before committing to a vendor, means better recommendations, fewer surprises on sizing or lead times, and a design that fits your space instead of working around it.
