What is a Pick to Light System?

Give your productivity a boost with a pick-to-light system, a material handling paperless picking process commonly used in warehouses to automate product picking in carousels or case and carton flow conveyor systems. Pick-to-light systems use a light display process to mark bins or shelves, directing the picking operator to the correct product location without having to rely on printed lists. As part of an Automated Storage and Retrieval System, pick to light systems greatly aid supply chain operations by improving productivity and accuracy for efficient picking in fulfillment operations.

With pick to light carousel control systems, carousels operate by bringing stored items or materials to the picking operator rather than the picking operator going to the product location to retrieve stock or materials. In addition to bringing the product front and center, light displays mark the carousel and shelf level to indicate exactly where the product is located. Depending on the size of your fulfillment operation, these carousel systems can pay for themselves in as little as three months.

What is an ASRS System?

Automated storage and retrieval systems are designed to automate the task of storing and retrieving parts, components, and products held in a user's inventory, consisting of a variety of computer control systems for placing and retrieving loads from defined storage locations.

After an item is picked, the ASRS software directs the picking carts to deposit the item at a product location where it is to be picked for order fulfillment. A system of conveyors, totes, shelving, and/or automated guided vehicles are often part of an ASRS system, transporting containers used for order batch picking into and out of the carousel storage area.

Benefits of an AS/RS system include increased productivity and accuracy, reduced labor for transporting items into and out of inventory, reduced inventory levels, more accurate tracking of inventory, and space savings. Industries that use ASRS control systems include manufacturing, distribution centers, fulfillment operations, retail distribution and wholesale, as well as military and government institutions.

The material handling equipment required for an ASRS system includes a Storage and Retrieval Machine (SRM) such as vertical or horizontal carousels used for rapid storage and retrieval of material, along with Warehouse Management System (WMS) software that acts as the brains of the system and controls the pick-to-light technology.
